Who says Icelandics aren’t cowy? Osk isn’t as fast or quick as a quarter horse, but the cows aren’t afraid of her, so she can enter a herd real quiet without much stress to the cows. It also makes sorting them easy. The cows seem to almost think she’s more bovine than equine (she certainly has as much fur as them!). Here’s a couple of pictures of her doing some cutting, team sorting, and log dragging. Note the lack of a western saddle. I’ve had a really hard time finding one that fits her, and since we weren’t doing any roping, her Icelandic saddle seems to work just fine.
These pictures are of Osk doing some cutting. This was her second time working cattle, so we're going nice and slow.
Here's some pictures of Osk dragging a log. I don't have any pictures, but Osk also learned to stay quiet while a rope was thrown all around her head and legs.
Osk really enjoyed the team sorting. She got to chase cows down the fence and then keep them at one end of the arena. The cows trotted in front of her real quiet and didn't seem to mind hanging out with her at the end of the arena instead of with their cow buddies.
