Welcome to Amazing Grace Ranch, a small Icelandic horse farm on the Central Coast of California.
A little bit about this rare breed:
Icelandics are brave, friendly, intelligent, affectionate and love people. They come in all colors, with lots of mane and tail that never seems to mat or need brushing. In winter they get a super thick, wooly coat that makes them look like teddy bears. In the summer they have "normal" slick coats.
Icelandics are hardy, seem to get fat off of thin air, aren't started under saddle until they're 4 years old and can be ridden well into their twenties. They are a smaller breed of horse, ranging between 12 - 14 hands, but can carry grown men with ease.
Icelandics have a smooth ground covering walk, trot, and canter. Icelandics can also "tolt". The tolt is a bounce-less, four beat lateral gait that is super comfortable to ride. Most Icelandics also can "pace". The flying pace is a very fast, exhilarating, lateral racing gait. Both tolt and pace are natural gaits that horses will do while playing in the pasture.
Icelandics make wonderful pleasure horses, but can easily excel in dressage, endurance, jumping, or competitive trail. Many owners of Icelandics get into the breed because they want a calm, sensible, "wash and wear" sort of horse.
